Hello from Beirut - Greetings from the green line

My first day in Beirut. I was a tourist (like in Lodz, Karolina). We (Frederic Lezmi and I) walked parts of the city. Fred was an exelent guide. He lived here for one year and wanted to show me his most wanted places and we tryed to photograph them. Some of them allready have disappeared. I didn`t understood to much of all his explanations of wich neigbourhoods was belonging to whom. But I loved it just going around... like a tourist.

Goodbey Balkan, for this time.

The last day in Sarajevo for this time. So with a smile and some tears on my face I`m leaving the Balkans. I´m thankfull to Frederic, who convinced me to make this project together. For a long time I didn`t worked on the streets like this. I enjoyed it.

I will be back on the block in May. See you in Beirut

Half time Priština

After three day of Priština I got used to the city. Now I´m discovering new images every day and I`m more confident in our Work. Priština is quite a small city, even if the number of inhabitants is around 500.000. But one can easily walk around it in a day. The houses and the flats of the people must be crowded. The people on the streets are quite friendly and like to speak to foreigners but taking pictures is not always wanted.

A wanted escape to Priština

Yesterday night we decided to flee to Priština, because the weather forecast for Sarajevo was rain for the next days. So we took the night bus to Priština. After 12 hours we arrived. Frederic has been here allready, but for me everything was new. At least we got nice light. So we started to discover Priština by feet. I`m not so convinced about my pictures but it is only the first day and I need to understand the city and it`s inhabitants.

The "inofficial" City of Sarajevo

The second day began with more clouds and a long walk to new Sarajevo ( the socialist suburbs of the City ). Still we found a lot of remaining wounds of the 1992 - 1995 war. The houses had holes from guns, bombs etc.. In the evening I climbed up a hill to have a look at the smaler houses, and neighbourhoods. Suddenly I found myself, in a very common structure. Some how this remembered me of the "Favelas" in Brazil. It was sofisticated but still it looked all grown without any plan. House beside hut, small paths between them.

First Day Sarajevo

First day in Sarajevo,

beside the cloudy weather, I found my self for the frist time in Sarajevo. The Balkan, with all my memories of the war in the 1990th. But I`m here with a friend Frederic Lezmi. We are making a project about post crises cities, so at least I´m not alone with my thougts.

Rwanda Update L`Esperance

What does a guatemalcian agronom with a german passport in rual Rwanda, close to the city of Kibuye? On top of a hill on the coast of lake Kivu is the small village Kirgarama. In 1994 at the Mugabo hospital just 1km from the village 15.000 men, woman and children where slaughterted. Just a few month later a german based NGO founded the Childrens Village L`Esperance at Kirgarama.

Rwanda Update Dr. Jahn

In Kigali, the capital of Rwanda we found an German pediater who created his own "Orphanate". He has a very special approach, the 40 jung men live together with him in two houses near the football stadium of Kigali. The Houses are kind of self administered by the teenagers. He goes every day to work in a hospital near Kigali mean wihle the boys go to school.

Reportage in Rwanda

At the moment I`m working in Ruanda on a reportage about child headed households. Ruanda is the contry with the relativly biggest amount of orphans in the world. My aim is to cover diverent projects who care for these children and also to tell the story of these children in a depth insight view.

I will try to update as much as possible images as work in progress. So that you can accompany the forecast of the story.

Famous Photographers in Arles

  • Famous Photographers inArles
  • René Burri with his new book "New York blackout"
  • Two Magnum photograpers
  • Cool Zoè

Last friday I went to Arles old and famous photo festival. I just wanted to meet some friends and colleagues but by the way I droped into Wolfgang Zurborn and he told me from his book signing at Schadens bookstore in the espace Van Goch.

This was a quite unique book signing. Maybe twelve photographers on two tables from Renè Burri to Rainer Riedler. All signing books in a row. Talking and laughing with each others. The "star" in this illustrious table was Rene Burri. This charming old men drawed on his books, spoke at least five languages and flirted with all human beeings close to him.
